The Triple Threat Ladies: Allison, Federal Prosecutor, Nicole, FBI Agent and Cassidy, TV/News Reporter are brought together once again in Lis Wiehl and April Henry’s third novel “Heart of Ice.”

This duo does a masterful job of weaving a very credible suspense story in spite of letting us know right up front who the criminal is. One would think the suspense is over, but not here as they methodically portray Elizabeth Avery as a Petri dish full of psychopathology. On the outside she is a façade of beauty, but on the inside she is a sociopath who is a calculating, emotionally distant, cold-blooded murderer that possesses the ability to cut right to the core of a person’s vulnerability.

Experiences in early childhood taught her how to manipulate weaker people and infuse them with a sense of perceived power that made them want to “rescue” and “protect” her. How ironic because it is Joey, the arsonist and Clark, the avenger who needed protection from her. No remorse or second thoughts here.

Wiehl and Henry continue weaving additional well-crafted story lines throughout the book and this is what makes their third series novel a real page turner. These story lines give the reader a bit of a respite from the darkness of Elizabeth Avery’s character. Read on.

I love this series and while I have read them in order, they can each stand alone as well. We get to meet three strong women who are faced with real problems and real decisions. When one falters, the others are there to pick herm up, just as we should be to each other. The characters are realistic, the storyline interesting, and this book has left me wanting to read more about these characters. I recommend this book to mystery/suspense lovers, both individuals and groups.

In a chillingly suspenseful thriller, Heart of Ice is easily the best book to date in the Triple Threat series…  A word of caution, though, before picking it up, might want to clear all scheduled events.  It’s a page turner that’s difficult to put down.

Wiehl and Henry have a knack for creating villains you wouldn’t want to run across in your daily life. Even though the identity of the murderer is known early on, the motivation and methods aren’t revealed until the heart-pounding ending. This novel is an exciting addition to the Triple Threat Club series.

It is an injustice to say that Pam Turlow is the reader of this book.  Pam Turlow really is the actress who brings the characters to full life.  There are many characters and Ms. Turlow uses her voice to give unique voice to them all.  I would think that, for a woman, male voices would give her a problem; that is not the case.  Each of the three women have their own voice as well, especially Nicole with her Southern accent and it is a marvel that Ms. Turlow was not only able to remember each voice but switch so effortlessly between them.

This is an exciting book, extremely well paced and suspenseful.  I know when you hear this audiobook you will be like me eager to hear the next offering in the series.  I think because of the incredible vocal acting ability of Pam Turlow that it makes the story even more exciting.  This is the first book in the series but be of good cheer, there is another in the series and, of course, read by the remarkable Pam Turlow.

Wiehl and Henry’s easy-to-read writing style is perfect for this fast-paced and intricate tale. The chapters, each of which is written from the point of view of one of the Triple Threat club members, are short, with many a cliffhanger ending to keep the reader turning pages. Katie’s blog, a voice from where – maybe the grave? – gives the book a touch of modern realism and provides the reader with one more set of clues with which to try to solve the crime on his/her own. Of course the misty cold setting of Portland in the winter doesn’t hurt the story’s ambiance either.
